Popular Keywords for Web Sites

Popular Keywords
I am always asked how do I choose the right search engine keywords? do I use the most popular key words? well this page is about how I choose product web site popular keywords for traffic. The high traffic web site popular keywords I choose are all free Google keywords based on buyer keywords and search engine traffic analysis, as this gives me the trends, the best markets, the right popular keywords to use, the best product to sell, and the product keywords not to use as you will see below.
If you have struggled like me in the past to find out what products you need to be selling, which real buyers are exactly searching for on the Internet, and the correct keywords to use to attract these buyers then this is how I do it.
What I do is look for is traffic trends for what product buyer keyword searches are being done on average over a twelve month period. Its better to use targeted free web site popular keywords that have a steady flow of search traffic, than those that produces a traffic spike, e.g. Halloween, unless that’s primarily the business your in, and you don’t mind the quiet periods
Once I see a steady product search trend, I then look at the overall product market, is it small or large. My philosophy is that its better to have a small piece of a large pie, as there’s always more to eat if you’re hungry, than have a large piece of a small pie, as once it’s eaten there’s hardly anything left.
How I find out what the top products that buyers (not product researchers) are actual looking for is really easy, I use the premium edition “Product Name Keywords” tool that gives me the most up-to-date real-time data through API calls directly on what product keywords buyers are actually looking for in the international markets such as ebay, Amazon, Google Product Search, and Shopping.com. This exclusive buyer popular keyword information is not available from the Google Tool, or any other available tool. Once I have the PNK merged top buyer searches, I then calculate the size of the overall product market, is it small or large, by doing a quick search at Google, Yahoo or Bing, e.g. “hi fi” 35,100,000 pages means it’s a big market with competition and buyers, but if I do one for “green martian food grows on earth” ZERO results are returned. I would sincerely suggest that you don’t ever set up a web page selling “green martian food”.
One tip is every time you do a search on Google, look for eight paid adverts on the right of the page, if people are wiling to pay for that product keyword then there’s a market there, no matter how small or large.
Popular Keywords – Daily / Monthly Search volume:
Use the keyword tool in Google AdWords, to determine the product web site keywords that have more than 26 searches per day or approx 770 month, if your products / goods / services you are selling are global then use the global column, but if you are only looking at e.g. the UK market, then use the local column. Discount all product site keywords less than 26 per day / 770 month.
Popular Keywords - Competition:
You need to know how easy or tough it’s going to be to rank for that keyword. You need to calculate the following 4 steps for each targeted keyword / phrase. TIP: It’s best doing this in a spreadsheet adding the extra columns, as you can export the keyword data from Google AdWords.
- COMP: The total number of web pages globally that mention a specific product keyword term in the same phrase word order in Google Index. E.g. “soft toys” 19,700,000
- TCOMP: The total number of web pages globally that mention all of the words in a product keyword term in the title of the page. E.g. allintitle:”soft toys” 754,000
- The ratio of TCOMP to COMP above. A low score indicates low competition for a product keyword, which is very good. E.g COMP is 19,700,000 and TCOMP is 754,000, then the competition ratio is 3.82% which leaves a total market availability of 96% for the targeted web page title keyword phrase. My advice is to discount any web site keywords with calculated ratios above 20%, unless you’re brave.
Calculation: 754,000 / 19,700,000 = 0.0382 x 100 = 3.82% which is OK as it’s less than 20%
- You need to calculate the ratio of Phrase to Broad searches for the targeted keyword. Minimum percentage is 15. This is done by performing two searches for the targeted keyword phrase. A broad search on Google for soft toys, = 61,600,000 and a phrase search “soft toys” = 19,700,000 therefore the Phrase to Broad ratio is 30.8%, anything below 15% then discount this keyword. Ideally you are looking for web site keywords that have the same keyword searches for broad and phrase e.g. 100%.
Calculation: 19,700,000 / 61,600,000 = 0.3198 x 100 = 31.98% is OK as its above 15%
If the popular keyword passes the TCOMP to COMP and Phase to Broad ratio calculations, then it’s a possible produc keyword phrase to use.
Once you have a qualified list of possible web site keywords, (one targeted keyword / phrase per web page), then the next step is analysing the current top ten spots on Google, Yahoo and Bing for those keywords.
What I do is build up a picture of how the current competitions on-page and off-page SEO stands. I do the following for each of the top ten. Three search engines top ten sites x the following 11 factors = 330 total checks to do, using some of the off-page data from either the SEO Quake Google Chrome extension, or the Mozilla Firefox SEO Quake plugin.
Popular Keywords - On-page factors:
- I check to see whether the popular keyword phrase e.g. ‘product reviews for audio’ is part of the web site URL e.g. www.product-reviews-for-audio.com
- If the title contains the popular keyword phrase ‘product reviews for audio ‘
- If the description Meta tag, contains the popular keyword phrase ‘product reviews for audio ‘
- If the h1,h2 to h6 tags contain the popular keyword phrase ‘product reviews for audio ‘
Popular Keywords - Off-page factors:
- Is the site listed within the Yahoo paid directory.
- Is the site listed within the DMOZ directory.
- Does the site have any back links from edu and gov domains. Use Yahoos’ siteexplorer to determine the Inlinks.
- How many back links for the whole site. Use Yahoos’ siteexplorer to determine the Inlinks for the domain.
- How many back links for the web page that is being checked. Use Yahoos’ siteexplorer to determine the Inlinks for each page.
- How old is the domain in years, versus your sites age.
- What is the current Google page rank, versus your sites page rank.
If the current top ten competition is weak with on-page and off-page factors, it is fairly easy to get to the first page of Google. If the current top ten is weak in either the off-page or on-page factors then it is still possible to get your web site to the top, for the targeted popular keyword, but it involves either more on-page or off-page SEO work, or work in both areas.
If the current top ten competition is strong in both areas, then my advice is to forget that product keyword phrase, and move onto the next popular keywords.
Once you have arrived at this stage, you not only have a big market for your goods / services, you will have real quality product website popular keywords / phrases that people are currently searching for daily / monthly, and you also know that the current top ten competition for those product web site keywords, on the major search engine is weak.
You can then analyse your web site, for content, speed, looks, on-page and off-page factors, against your competition, knowing what needs to be done to get to the first page, and stay there, bearing in mind that web-pages are firstly for humans to read, and secondly search engines.
On the vendor site for the “Product Name Keywords” tool you can download a free version of the popular keywords tool, which has no time or usage restrictions, but doesn’t include the “ebay Top Search keyword”, “keywords cleaner/ list save”, “proxy settings”, “Amazon lists for Best sellers, hot new releases, most wished for, most gifted” functions which in my opinion are really essential to find the right popular keywords.
The premium edition “Product Name Keywords” tool comes with a 60 day 100% refund guarantee if you are not satisfied, so there is absolutely no risk to you.
